In an era of death and disease, Shakespeare's plays were filled with violence and tragedy. His characters died in all sorts of gruesome ways, from snakebites to stabbings to broken hearts.

Snakebites

Snakebites were a common cause of death in Shakespeare's time. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet takes her own life by drinking a potion that contains a deadly snake venom. In Antony and Cleopatra, Cleopatra kills herself by letting an asp bite her.

Stabbings

Stabbings were another common cause of death in Shakespeare's plays. In Julius Caesar, Caesar is stabbed to death by a group of conspirators. In Hamlet, Hamlet stabs Polonius to death, and is later stabbed himself by Laertes.

Broken Hearts

While snakebites and stabbings were often quick and painless, death by a broken heart could be a long and agonizing process. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet both die of broken hearts after they are separated by their feuding families.
